A defence-related career can be meaningful, technical and stable. It can also carry ethical, legal, security and personal implications. Prepare questions before you commit to a role, degree path, clearance process or employer.

Role-fit questions

  1. Is this role uniformed, civilian public-sector, contractor, supplier, research or policy work?
  2. What does the person in this role actually do during a normal week?
  3. Which skills matter most: technical depth, project management, analysis, field experience, communication or compliance?
  4. What education, certifications or experience are genuinely required?

Security and responsibility questions

  1. Does the role require security clearance, citizenship, residency or background checks?
  2. Will the work involve classified information, export controls or restricted technologies?
  3. How does the employer handle ethics, end-use, compliance and responsibility?
  4. Could the role limit future travel, employment or public communication?

Career-direction questions

  1. Does this path lead to technical mastery, management, policy, operations or commercial work?
  2. Can skills transfer outside defence later?
  3. What should I learn during the next 30 days before applying?
